Same-Day Courier Service: How It Works, Cut-Off Times, and Cost
How a same-day courier works, what USPS, FedEx, UPS and delivery apps offer for same-day delivery, how cut-off times are decided, and what drives the cost.

A same-day courier picks up an item at your door and drives it straight to the recipient the same day, usually inside one metro area (BLS). You book the job, a local courier collects it, and you get tracking on the way and proof of delivery at the end. Whether today is still possible depends on distance, the vehicle, courier availability, and when the recipient closes.
This guide is for the owner or office manager with something that has to cross town today. It compares the national carriers, the delivery apps, and a local same day courier service, using what each one publishes as of October 2026.
Key takeaways
- A same-day courier job is a direct, point-to-point drive, finished the day you book it.
- USPS has no same-day product. Its fastest service, Priority Mail Express, takes 1-3 days (USPS).
- FedEx and UPS sell same-day services, but as of October 2026 none shows a public price (FedEx newsroom, UPS).
- There’s no standard cut-off time. Roadie, for one, advises a cut-off about two hours before the pickup location closes (Roadie).
- Price depends on distance and drive time, urgency, vehicle size, stops, and waiting, so quote your real route.
What is a same-day courier, and how does a delivery run?
A same-day courier is a driver who collects an item from one sender and delivers it directly, on the day it’s booked. The trip is point to point: your door to the recipient’s door, in one vehicle. That suits anything that can’t wait until tomorrow, like a signed contract or lunch for 40 people.
The work is local by nature. BLS notes that local messengers and local delivery firms usually work within one metro area, part of a couriers and messengers sector (NAICS 492) that employed about 1,089,600 people in September 2026, a preliminary figure (BLS).
From booking to proof of delivery
Here’s how a job runs with our couriers.
- Booking. You give the pickup and dropoff addresses, what you’re sending, and when it has to arrive.
- Assignment. The job goes to an independent local courier. Couriers on your preferred list are offered the pickup first.
- Pickup. The courier arrives and loads the item. Have it packed, labeled, and waiting.
- The drive. You follow the trip on live tracking, and the recipient gets a tracking link by SMS or email.
- Proof of delivery. You get delivery notes and a proof-of-delivery photo, and you rate the delivery.
Does USPS, FedEx, or UPS deliver same day?
FedEx and UPS sell same-day services. USPS doesn’t. Here’s what each carrier publishes as of October 2026.
| Carrier and service | What it offers | Pricing |
|---|---|---|
| USPS (Priority Mail Express) | No same-day product. The fastest service is 1-3 day delivery by 6 PM, with a money-back guarantee | From $37.05 at a Post Office |
| FedEx SameDay Local (FedEx newsroom, product page) | Launched March 24, 2026 with the technology company OneRail. A two-hour window or end-of-day delivery through more than 1,000 delivery providers | Not published; sold through FedEx sales representatives |
| FedEx SameDay (FedEx) | A nationwide door-to-door service that delivers within hours, any day of the year | Not published on the page |
| UPS Express Critical (UPS) | A same-day service for urgent shipments, available around the clock and booked by phone | By quote |
None of the three same-day services lists a price on these pages, so comparing them takes a phone call or a sales conversation. If the item can wait a day or more, USPS Priority Mail Express has a public starting price.
What do delivery apps and local couriers offer?
Beyond the national carriers, there are two more same day delivery options: app-based networks and a local courier service. Details are as of October 2026.
App-based delivery networks
| Service | Published details | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Metrobi, a local delivery marketplace for businesses (Metrobi) | Same-day, scheduled, and recurring deliveries and multi-stop routes, in vehicles from SUVs to cargo vans. Live driver tracking and photo proof of delivery | No contracts, setup fees, or minimum volume. Rates aren’t published. Pricing is based on distance, time, and stops, and the pricing page gives an estimate |
| Uber’s consumer package service, launched as Uber Connect in 2020 (Uber blog, Uber help) | Items under 30 lb and under $100 in value that fit in a midsize trunk. No alcohol or medication | Uber carries no package insurance. A distance limit isn’t published |
| Roadie, a UPS company (Roadie) | 2-hour, 4-hour, and end-of-day windows. Up to 100 miles. Items up to 12 feet and 300 lb. More than 310,000 drivers | Rates aren’t published. Price depends on location, distance, size and weight, and urgency |
| DoorDash Drive On-Demand (DoorDash) | Delivery for orders a merchant takes on its own channels | Flat per-delivery pricing with no commission. See the merchant site for the current rate |
The limits show which job each one suits. Uber’s point to small, low-value items: a 10 lb, $60 box of samples is inside them, and a $400 centerpiece order isn’t. Roadie’s run the other way, toward long trips and big items.
A local courier service
A local courier service differs in four ways.
- A direct drive. One courier takes your item from pickup to dropoff.
- A choice of vehicle. Our couriers drive SUVs, minivans, and cargo vans. We don’t run refrigerated vans, though temperature-controlled delivery options are available.
- Routes as well as single trips. Book same-day, scheduled, recurring, or multi-stop deliveries. Routes of 20 or more stops are common.
- Couriers you choose. You rate each delivery, keep a preferred list (those couriers are offered your next pickup first), and can block a courier.
Across our network, the average driver rating is 4.97 out of 5, the on-time score is 93%, and delivery reliability is 99.3%. We have city pages for 100 US metro areas, from a courier service in New York City to a courier service in Houston, all listed on the locations page.
How late can you book a same-day courier?
There’s no industry-standard cut-off time for same-day delivery. One published example, as of October 2026: Roadie advises a cut-off about two hours before the pickup location closes (Roadie). If your shop closes at 6 PM, that guidance puts the last booking at about 4 PM.
Four things decide whether a delivery can still be done today.
- Distance. A 4-mile trip across downtown and a 40-mile trip to the suburbs don’t share a deadline.
- The vehicle needed. A job that needs a cargo van can only go to a courier who drives one.
- Courier availability. A courier has to be free and close enough to reach you in time.
- The recipient’s closing time. This is the real deadline. If nobody is there to accept the item, your booking time doesn’t matter.
Here’s an example. It’s 2:30 PM, the drive takes 45 minutes in afternoon traffic, and the recipient’s front desk closes at 5 PM. Allow 15 minutes to load, and the courier has to reach you by 4 PM. Booked at 2:30 PM, that’s realistic. Booked at 3:45 PM, it probably isn’t.
So book as soon as you know about the job, and share the recipient’s hours. If it’s close, ask first: our support answers in 76 seconds on average.
What does a same-day courier cost?
A same-day courier is priced job by job, so no single number would be honest. Five things move the price.
- Distance and drive time. Miles count, and so does how long they take. Ten miles at 10 AM isn’t ten miles at 5 PM.
- Urgency. How soon the pickup is changes the price. Within the hour is a different job from end of day.
- Vehicle. SUVs, minivans, and cargo vans are priced by size. Book the smallest one your load fits in.
- Stops. Every stop adds to the route. Ten drops on one route is a different price from ten separate trips.
- Waiting. A courier held at a loading dock is still on your job. Ask any provider how it handles waiting, and have the item ready.
That list also answers the search for the cheapest same day delivery: take the widest window you can, book the smallest vehicle that fits, and group stops into one route. For a price range on your own trip, use our delivery cost calculator.
Does every delivery need the fastest window?
Not always. Two consumer studies point in different directions. McKinsey surveyed more than 1,000 US consumers in February 2025: 90% will wait two to three days for delivery, and under 5% pick the fastest option regardless of price (McKinsey). Capgemini surveyed 12,000 consumers in 12 countries in January 2025: demand for two-hour delivery rose from 34% to 65% in two years (Capgemini).
Both studies measured shoppers, not business senders. Ask your recipient when they need the item. If 5 PM works as well as noon, don’t pay for noon.
Which same-day delivery option fits your job?
Start with the job, not the brand. The table uses each provider’s published details as of October 2026.
| Job | What matters most | Options that fit |
|---|---|---|
| Documents | A direct trip and proof it arrived | A local courier, with a proof-of-delivery photo |
| A small parcel | Weight and value | Uber’s consumer package service under 30 lb and under $100. Roadie or a local courier above that |
| A catering order | Arrival time and room for trays | A local catering courier service in an SUV or minivan. DoorDash Drive for orders from your own channels |
| A bulky item | Length, weight, and vehicle size | Roadie up to 12 feet and 300 lb. A local courier with a cargo van |
| Ten stops in one afternoon | One route instead of ten trips | A multi-stop route with a local courier, as used for wholesale delivery |
What can’t go by courier?
Hazardous materials are the main limit. Federal rules say no one may offer or accept a hazardous material for transport unless it’s properly classed, described, packaged, marked, and labeled (49 CFR 171.2(e)). That covers the sender as well as the carrier. Providers add their own lists too: Uber’s consumer package service takes no alcohol or medication (Uber help). If you’re unsure about a product, ask before you book.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a same-day courier cost?
It depends on distance and drive time, number of stops, vehicle size, and how soon the pickup is. The delivery cost calculator gives a price range for your trip in about a minute.
What is the cheapest way to send something the same day?
No single service is cheapest, because several providers don’t publish prices. As of October 2026, FedEx’s and UPS’s same-day services are sold through sales or by quote (FedEx newsroom, UPS), and Roadie’s rates aren’t public (Roadie). Quote your real route, then widen the window or group your stops.
How fast is a rush delivery versus standard same-day?
Published windows show the range. Roadie offers 2-hour, 4-hour, and end-of-day windows (Roadie), and FedEx SameDay Local offers a two-hour window or end-of-day delivery (FedEx newsroom). Rush usually means the short window. Standard means by end of day.
Can I use Uber or DoorDash to send a package for my business?
For small, low-value items it can work. Uber’s consumer package service takes items under 30 lb and under $100 in value that fit in a midsize trunk (Uber help). DoorDash Drive On-Demand is a merchant product: flat per-delivery pricing, no commission, for orders taken on your own channels (DoorDash).
Is my delivery insured?
It depends on the provider. Uber, for example, carries no package insurance on its consumer package service (Uber help). Before you send anything valuable, ask the provider what its cover is, what the limit is, and how a claim works.
The Bottom Line
A same-day courier makes sense when something has to cross town today and a 1-3 day promise won’t do. USPS has no same-day product. FedEx and UPS do, through sales or by quote. Uber and Roadie publish limits you can check, and a local courier service adds vehicle choice, multi-stop routes, and couriers you pick. No cut-off time is standard: distance, vehicle, courier availability, and the recipient’s closing time decide it. Our business page shows how this works by industry. To see what your own delivery would cost, enter a pickup and a dropoff address in the delivery cost calculator.
