The IRS changed the 2026 rates partway through the year (Announcement 2026-11). Driving before July 1 is reimbursed at 72.5¢ a mile and driving from July 1 at 76¢, so a trip log that crosses that date uses both.
| Period | Business | Medical or military moving | Charity | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| July 1 to December 31, 2026 | 76¢ | 23.5¢ | 14¢ | IRS Announcement 2026-11 |
| January 1 to June 30, 2026 | 72.5¢ | 20.5¢ | 14¢ | IRS Notice 2026-10 |
| 2025 | 70¢ | 21¢ | 14¢ | IRS standard mileage rates |
| 2024 | 67¢ | 21¢ | 14¢ | IRS standard mileage rates |
The business rate is based on a yearly study of the fixed and variable costs of running a car; the medical and moving rate covers only the variable costs, and the charity rate is set by law (IRS). The moving rate applies only to active-duty members of the Armed Forces and certain intelligence community members. Rates checked against the IRS standard mileage rates page on 2026-10-21.
How to Calculate Mileage Reimbursement
- Record each trip: the date, where you drove and why, and the miles.
- Multiply each trip’s miles by the rate in effect on its date.
- Add business parking fees and tolls, which are paid on top of the mileage rate.
Example: 120 business miles in June 2026 and 80 in July come to 120 × $0.725 + 80 × $0.76 = $87.00 + $60.80 = $147.80.
Driving between home and your regular workplace is commuting, not business mileage, however far it is, and parking at your own workplace counts as commuting too (IRS Publication 463). The standard rate already covers fuel, so you cannot add gas receipts on top; you use either the standard rate or your actual costs.
Mileage Reimbursement for Employers
When an employer pays a per-mile allowance at or below the IRS rate and the employee reports the date, place, and business purpose of each trip, the allowance is not included in the employee’s taxable wages. Any amount above the IRS rate is reported as wages in box 1 of Form W-2 (IRS Publication 463).
Employers can pay their own rate. To check a company rate against the IRS one, choose “Company rate” in the calculator and enter it.
What Reimbursed Miles Add to Each Delivery
A business that pays staff to deliver in their own cars pays for the miles both ways. At 76¢ a mile, a customer 6 miles away costs $9.12 in mileage for the round trip, before the driver’s wage.
Add the driver’s wage for the time on the road and the delivery costs more again. A courier is paid for the delivery one way, with no mileage log to keep: the delivery cost calculator prices a route from two addresses.

MILEAGE RATE FAQ
Mileage Reimbursement Questions
What is the IRS mileage rate for 2026?
For business driving it is 72.5¢ per mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76¢ per mile from July 1 to December 31, 2026. The medical and military moving rate is 20.5¢ and then 23.5¢, and the charity rate is 14¢ all year.
Did the mileage rate go up in 2026?
Yes, twice. The business rate was 70 cents in 2025, rose to 72.5¢ on January 1, 2026, and to 76¢ on July 1, 2026, under IRS Announcement 2026-11.
How do you calculate mileage reimbursement for 2026?
Multiply the business miles driven before July 1 by $0.725 and the miles driven from July 1 by $0.76, then add business parking and tolls. Enter each trip with its date in the calculator above and it splits the miles for you.
Is 50 cents a mile a good reimbursement rate?
It is well below the 2026 IRS business rate of 72.5¢ and 76¢, which the IRS bases on the full cost of running a car. An employer can pay less than the IRS rate; the IRS rate is the most it can pay without the excess counting as wages.
Can I claim both mileage and gas?
No. The standard mileage rate already includes fuel, along with maintenance, insurance, and depreciation. You use either the standard rate or your actual costs. Business parking fees and tolls are the exception and are added on top of the rate.
Do delivery drivers use the IRS mileage rate?
Self-employed couriers and app drivers can use the business rate for the miles they drive for work. Employees who deliver in their own cars are reimbursed at whatever rate their employer pays, which is tax-free up to the IRS rate when they log their trips.
