LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
What to Know Before Booking a Courier in Birmingham
Birmingham sits in a valley with a mountain between downtown and its largest suburbs. These six points shape a delivery.
Red Mountain
Red Mountain separates downtown from Homewood, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, and the 280 corridor. Only a few roads cross it, chiefly the Red Mountain Expressway and I-65, and they carry the whole commute.
Highway 280
US 280 southeast of the city is lined with offices, shops, and traffic signals for miles. It is the only practical way to many addresses and one of the slowest roads in the state at rush hour.
The Downtown Interchange
I-65 and I-20/59 meet beside downtown at a tangle of ramps locals call Malfunction Junction. I-459 loops around the south side when it is jammed.
Trains Through the Middle
Railroad tracks run straight through the center of the city between downtown and Southside. Most streets cross on viaducts or underpasses, and the few grade crossings can be blocked by long freight trains.
The Medical District
The university and its hospitals fill dozens of blocks on Southside. Each building has its own dock or desk for deliveries, so the building name and department matter.
Tornado Season and Ice
Severe storms are most likely in spring and again in late fall. A rare winter ice storm can strand traffic on the area’s hills within an hour, and deliveries wait until roads are treated.
