LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

What to Know Before Booking a Courier in Detroit

Metro Detroit is laid out on mile roads and sunken freeways, with a U-turn where other cities put a left turn. These six points shape a delivery.

  1. The Michigan Left

On many of the area’s wide boulevards, left turns at major intersections are not allowed. Drivers go through or turn right, then use a U-turn lane in the median, which changes which side of the road a courier approaches from.

  2. Mile Roads

The main east-west roads are named for their distance from downtown: 8 Mile, 12 Mile, 16 Mile, and so on, though several have other names in different towns. Big Beaver Road and 16 Mile are the same road.

  3. No Toll Roads

Metro Detroit’s freeways are free. The only tolls are on the crossings to Canada, which a local delivery does not use.

  4. Border Traffic

The Ambassador Bridge, the tunnel to Windsor, and the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which opened in 2026, put trucks and customs traffic on I-75 and the streets of southwest Detroit and downtown.

  5. Sunken Freeways Flood

Long stretches of I-94, I-75, and the Lodge run below street level, and the heaviest summer storms can fill them with water. Couriers move to the surface streets until the freeways drain.

  6. Game Nights and the Dream Cruise

Ford Field, Comerica Park, and the hockey and basketball arena sit a few blocks apart downtown. In August the Woodward Dream Cruise slows Woodward Avenue through Ferndale, Royal Oak, and Birmingham for days.
