LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
What to Know Before Booking a Courier in Omaha
Omaha climbs west from the Missouri River on a numbered grid, with Iowa on the far bank. These six points shape a delivery.
Streets Count West from the River
Numbered streets start at the Missouri River and climb westward, so an address at 180th Street is about 15 miles from downtown. Dodge Street divides north from south.
Dodge Street
Dodge is the main east-west road and carries most cross-town traffic. In West Omaha it rises onto an elevated expressway, and addresses along it are reached from the roads below.
Streetcar Construction
A streetcar line is being built between downtown and the medical center along Farnam and Harney streets. Blocks and bridges on the route have closed in stages, so couriers check the current detours.
Two States
Council Bluffs and Carter Lake are in Iowa. Several free bridges connect them to Omaha, and the state belongs in the address.
June Baseball
The college baseball championship fills the downtown ballpark for nearly two weeks every June. Hotels and restaurants order heavily, and the streets north of downtown are closed or crowded on game days.
The Base in Bellevue
The air force base south of the city controls entry at its gates. A delivery to a building on base has to be arranged by the person receiving it, or it stops at the visitor center.
