LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
What to Know Before Booking a Courier in Syracuse
Syracuse is the hub of Central New York, a university and hospital city known for its snow and for a highway that is being taken down. These six points shape a delivery.
The Viaduct Project
The elevated stretch of I-81 through downtown is being removed and replaced with a street-level boulevard, with through traffic moved to the highway around the east side. Ramps and lanes change as the work moves, so couriers check current routes.
The Snowiest Big City
Syracuse averages more than 110 inches of snow a year, among the most of any large American city. Roads are plowed quickly, but squalls off Lake Ontario cut visibility with little warning.
University Hill
The university, a medical university, and several hospitals share a steep hill east of downtown. Parking is scarce, and basketball and football crowds at the dome fill the streets on game days.
The Thruway Runs North of Town
I-90 passes north of the city and is tolled without booths. I-81, I-481, and I-690 are free and handle nearly all local deliveries.
The Fair
The state fair runs for 13 days at the end of August on the west side of the lake and draws about a million visitors. I-690 near the fairgrounds is slow all day.
Low Bridge on the Parkway
The Onondaga Lake Parkway passes under a railroad bridge with a clearance of 10 feet 9 inches, and tall vehicles are banned from it. High-roof vans and box trucks headed to Liverpool take another road.
