The Isthmus
Downtown sits on a strip of land less than a mile wide between two lakes. Only a few streets run its length, so traffic funnels onto East Washington Avenue, and cross-town trips go around the lakes.
The Beltline
The Beltline highway arcs around the south and west sides and is the main route between the east side, Fitchburg, Verona, and Middleton. It is slow at both rush hours and is not tolled.
The Capitol Square
Streets circle the Capitol one-way, and State Street between the Capitol and campus is closed to most vehicles. A farmers market fills the square on Saturday mornings from spring to fall.
Campus
The university has about 50,000 students and its own delivery rules, with many buildings reached only from service drives. Move-in in late August and football Saturdays close streets around it.
Winter Parking
Alternate-side parking applies overnight from mid-November to mid-March, and snow emergencies tighten it. Curb space near downtown is tight all winter.
