LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
What to Know Before Booking a Courier in Winston-Salem
Winston-Salem is a former tobacco and textile city that now runs on medicine and research, on the hilly west side of the Triad. These six points shape a delivery.
Salem Parkway
The freeway through downtown, once Business 40, was rebuilt and renamed Salem Parkway. I-40 itself passes south of the city, so directions that say 40 may mean either one.
The Beltway
The Northern Beltway is being built in sections around the east and north sides. The open parts already take traffic off US 52, and it is not tolled.
Hospitals and Research
Two large hospital systems and a medical school make health care the city’s biggest employer, and former tobacco factories downtown now hold labs and offices. Each building has its own receiving desk.
US 52
US 52 runs north to south through the city on an older, tight freeway with short ramps. It is the way to Lexington and to King and Mount Airy.
Part of the Triad
Greensboro is about 28 miles east and High Point about 20 miles southeast. The region’s airport sits between the three, about 20 miles from downtown Winston-Salem.
Hills and Ice
The city is hillier than its neighbors, and winter storms often arrive as freezing rain. Steep streets are the last to clear.
