LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

What to Know Before Booking a Courier in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is a long, narrow city at the foot of a mountain, with one interstate and several military bases. These six points shape a delivery.

  1. One Interstate

I-25 is the only freeway through the city, running north to south. Powers Boulevard parallels it on the east side, and everything else is surface streets, so cross-town trips take longer than the map suggests.

  2. Bases Control Access

Fort Carson, Peterson and Schriever Space Force bases, and the Air Force Academy all control entry at their gates. A delivery onto any of them needs access arranged by the recipient ahead of time.

  3. Monument Hill

North of the city, I-25 climbs over the Palmer Divide, which gets far more snow and wind than Colorado Springs itself. It can close or slow to a crawl in a storm while downtown is dry.

  4. Hail and Afternoon Storms

Late spring and summer afternoons bring fast-moving thunderstorms, and some drop large hail. Couriers wait them out under cover, so short delays are normal.

  5. Summer Visitors on the West Side

Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs, and the road up the pass on Highway 24 are crowded from late May through August. Deliveries on the west side are quicker early in the day.

  6. Express Lanes Toward Denver

The stretch of I-25 between Monument and Castle Rock has tolled express lanes. Denver is about 70 miles north and is a separate market.
